Conceived after two years of research and developed by a dedicated working group, the pavilion offered a constellation of projects that collectively defined the concept of Food Culture—its methodologies, thematic structures, and artistic language. The layout followed a thematic program resembling a microcosm, where each intervention contributed to a broader reflection on nourishment, ritual, and global interconnectedness.
At the entrance, visitors encountered the pavilion’s centerpiece: the Infinity Table, a 41- meter-long structure made in the shape of an infinity symbol. It functioned as a communal space for exchange and dialogue. Embedded in its surface, illuminated glass cases displayed dry foods—beans, corn, rice—on one side, and objects, products, and documents from the FoodCultura Collection on the other. One loop of the table housed a high-tech kitchen, where over 100 chefs—professional and amateur—offered samples of insects and other exotic dishes, stimulating olfactory and gustatory experiences. As she wrote to John Cage in the autumn of 1983, following the untimely deaths of the opera’s patrons—Wies Smals, founder of De Appel, and curator Josine van Droffelaar, in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps—she would have at last had the support to “communicate the finest of my thought to others.” Amacher’s serial, intended for broadcast, sought to transmit her evolving ideas about perception, listening, and composition to a broader public—shifting music away from “nod and tap recognition” toward a transformative practice that could awaken intelligence to “unrecognized and new perceptual modes.”

Set in the year 2021, Intelligent Life follows the employees of Supreme Connections Inc., a music entertainment corporation navigating a future in which artificial intelligence generates music faster than composers can. Anticipating an industry-wide downturn, Supreme Connections president Aplisa Kandel seeks advanced technologies that will revolutionize the act of listening and the future of music, including a bio-music script that lets the user hear Bach from the aural perspective of a reindeer and a wearable device that goes beyond replicating the mechanical tympanic resonances of the listening subject to produce the “listening mind” or the “sophisticated perceiver”—capturing and reproducing all the emotional and psychological associations unique to each individual.

Though Amacher could not realize Intelligent Life in any of its intended forms—she theorized its publication as a serialized radio broadcast and television simulcast, among other configurations—she continued designing “treatments” for the opera for much of her career. It is a compact ‘pocket-book’ format publication composed of four main sections. The first, ‘DIS-BRANDED’, is a text of 20 short page-long chapters exposing the ideological underbelly and real-world impact of branding. The second, ‘MIXED MESSAGES’, is a provocative visual essay illuminating the texts’ main themes. The third, ‘MANUAL’, presents a framework for a critical alternative to corporate branding, humorously appropriating found instructional diagrams as a brand manual satire. This section also includes examples of completed contemporary projects that have implemented post-branding principles. The book concludes with ‘CONTEXT’, featuring a conversation with cultural theorist Brian Holmes and an argument with design historian Steven Heller.

Part design experiment, part critical theory, and part how-to-manual, What is Post-Branding? introduces a creative counter to branding’s neoliberal orthodoxy.

A bootleg publication by The Best Damn Pet Shop In Town collecting every title card from the Treehouse of Horror series from season 1-35 of The Simpsons.

A bootleg publication by The Best Damn Pet Shop In Town collecting every title card from The Itchy &
