Los Usos de la Decoración

This book contains four essays that investigate a set of normative representations of non-professional home decoration and its instrumentation within various economies.

Decorating is a labor—at once material and immaterial, productive and reproductive—that is rendered invisible as such and thus exploitable by its widespread trivialization, disparagement, and denigration in both popular and academic discourses. Parallel to this devaluation, decoration is adorned with an accumulation of often incoherent promises that legitimize its cancellation as labor, structure its practices, and provide for its utility in contexts seemingly far from the home.
