Exhibitions

A tiny room in the back of our bookshop was turned into a big gallery space when we realized books are actually very small. Every month we hold monographic exhibitions, most of them devoted to the presentation of our own small-run artist books and prints. A public opening sets the start of each project, announced by our monthly invitations sent by mail to our friends and customers, and that are designed after the deeply missed postcards from ‘La Sala Vinçon’.

In this first ceramics exhibition in Barcelona, Evripidis Sabatis (Athens, 1979) transforms Terranova into a Teratarium, an artificial ecosystem for his Terata.
We find beings that can be interpreted as monsters, omens of a strange future, wonders of a world that is simultaneously familiar and unusual. There are tangles of tentacles, marine forms, scaly textures, outstretched hands, mutated mobile phones, and sensual and terrifying orifices. These works reflect on a post-pandemic world, with climate collapse looming, fragile mental health, and the threat of armed conflict, raising questions about the commodification of terror, the banality of atrocity, and the pornography of the apocalypse. The grotesque and the horrifying merge with the beautiful, creating decorative objects for a turbo-capitalist world.

The ceramic pieces are displayed in both street windows and the corner vitrine, while he gallery space will hold a selection of framed pencil drawings from the artist.

Familia Real is a photographic project that dwells on the margins of mass society, on the periphery of the normative, in its shadows. Far from dogma and convention, it presents a series of portraits of post-pandemic youth identified with the counterculture surrounding punk music and its aesthetics: a mosaic of faces and expressions that seek themselves in the mirror of the past to shape their present. From there, the author weaves a dialogue between times and generations. This exercise in memory and exploration becomes a testimony, an act of resistance against oblivion.

Artist, restorer and interior designer Marta Claret has been making watercolor paintings of the covers of every single book she's read for many, many years, filling hundreds of pages of personal diaries.

Recently, she's started to apply this to geometric pieces of ceramic that she bakes and vitrifies, creating a glossy, sturdy object that recreates the size and format of each book.

Terranova is proud to present Marta Claret's first ever exhibition, showing her watercolors and personal diaries in our gallery space and the ceramic works of both of our street windows.

The Mediterranean Motorway, or AP-7, is the main route that connects all road traffic along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, stretching from Algeciras to France. Its first section, inaugurated in 1969, was widely featured in Francoist development propaganda as a symbol of progress and the starting point of Spanish consumer society. Today, the imagery surrounding this road is far removed from the optimistic fascination of the 1970s, and the landscapes and architectures along the way evoke a sense of strangeness. This archival and research project seeks to look beyond nostalgia in the narrative of progress and tourism in our country.

It was the artist Olivia Albanell who first told us about the very obscure and almost unseen drawings her father had done in his youth. Most of them were trapped inside the covers of numerous notebooks, some others in bigger, loose sheets of paper. They all reflect a time of psychedelic inner exploration, when Josep Maria Albanell was a young artist and designer participating in the underground subculture of Barcelona’s music and journalism scenes.

Terranova ended up having the privilege to show Albanell’s drawings to the public for the first time ever, in this exhibition at our bookstore in February and March 2024.

Pere Llobera presents two almost antagonistic works in which he reflects on the contrast between the innocence of childhood and the cynicism that too often accompanies adulthood. In the small interior gallery, a piece of the house of his friend, the curator David Armengol, is recreated, almost like a small diorama. Pere gifted Armengol a small portrait of Michael Haneke, which coexists with the children’s drawings of Armengol’s daughters.

In the shop window, there is a large canvas of a girl alone in a forest, for which Llobera painted a real suit of armor that he made for his own daughter when she was only two years old.

A tribute to our mother

“Our mother, Louise Remy, was born in France into a family where culture and a thirst for knowledge were constant. Her father was a professor of zoology at the University of Nancy. Louise earned her degree in Art History at the same university and then went to Paris to further her studies. It was there that she met our father, Francisco Ballesta, a Catalan doctor who had come to expand his knowledge in cardiology. They married in 1951 and moved to Barcelona. She quickly learned Spanish and Catalan and realized that taking care of her home alone wasn’t enough for her. She began her teaching career at the French Institute of Barcelona, initially teaching language, and later art history. Over the course of about 40 years, she alternated between these two disciplines. Her last 20 years were dedicated to explaining various art history topics to an increasingly large group of what she called her ‘student-friends’ or ‘friend-students’; she wasn’t quite sure in which order to place the terms. These were individuals who found in her a combination of culture, art history, and French that catered to their interests, and she continued to inspire them with her enthusiasm even until the age of 86 or 87. Our mother truly enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others.

We could say that her extensive library was nourished by two sources: Firstly, books that were given to our father by numerous patients and friends. These books covered topics related to Catalonia, its culture, geography, and history, or, upon learning of our mother’s interest in art, books about specific aspects of art. These books could be considered part of her more scattered collection.

Secondly, very specific books that focused on specialized aspects of art history, directly related to her classes and the subjects she was going to teach. Our mother would visit libraries, initially the one at the French Institute, later the one at the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and she always appreciated the help she received there. She also purchased books. Her trips to Perpignan to acquire a specific book were quite frequent. These were the books from which she found the information to complement her explanations or illustrate her classes with numerous slides. It’s important to note that our mother was not a typical teacher: every year, she changed her program based on the interests of her students, her own knowledge, and, above all, taking into account the exhibitions that might be taking place that year in Barcelona or some corner of Catalonia, in Paris, or in some other European city. She could spend hours and hours at a table covered with open books, researching or photographing artworks until late into the night.

Two pieces of information that could summarize our mother’s attitude and interest in art books are that: she was unfamiliar with the possibilities of the internet, and she couldn’t comprehend how one could find excellent photos or comprehensive information online. Additionally, she had completed her studies in Art History between 1947 and 1950, using books with black and white photos of dubious quality. When comparing them with the quality of editions from recent decades and the books she collected, she was genuinely amazed.”

Jeric Acuña’s photographic collection delves into the meaning behind the act of holding hands behind the back, a gesture often associated with the elderly and men. Through spontaneous photos taken with mobile devices or analog cameras, Acuña captures the quietness, calmness, and lack of danger conveyed by this posture. It represents a rejection of a defensive mindset, a resignation towards fate, or a deep trust in the outside world. The exhibition explores the cultural significance of walking with hands behind the back, showcasing diverse situations where individuals create something together without shared goals.

It is an ode to a serene and elegant lifestyle, appreciating life’s intricacies and defying the chaotic pace of modern existence. Furthermore, the project explores the nostalgic and bittersweet emotions tied to the gesture, reflecting on time and the overcoming of temporal dilemmas. Ultimately, Acuña’s work invites contemplation on the profound personal and socio-cultural meanings conveyed by this seemingly simple act.

The video is a display of some of the anonymous restoration or dignification interventions that I have carried out in the public space since 2019.

The selected objects, based on their position on the threshold between the public and private buildings, become landscape configurators.

As landscape configurators, they connect with the idea of the growing degradation of our environment, a gradual but increasingly evident fact in various aspects.

The simple gesture that I repeat, an instantaneous and simple action, redefines the object and, by extension, the environment to which it belongs.

The exhibited lights are a display of the three size versions and different finishes (color or chrome) in which the MBM-2 or 20/53 model was produced (according to the manufacturer’s catalog).

However, they suggest the fate that objects can take, from conservation to degradation, and from intervention to restoration.

To celebrate the first anniversary of our bookstore, we wanted to do something different in our small gallery, so we asked the artist Irene Royo to paint directly onto the three walls, in a gesture that accompanies the fragile and intuitive nature of her work, which on the one hand acquires strength by the ambition of the dimensions and the aggressive nature of the intervention, but on the other hand contains the tragic component of the ephemeral, as it will be erased a month after its creation.

The exhibition is accompanied by the sale of small-format originals, as well as a series of enlargements of super 8 stills taken from the artist’s abstract experiments by directly intervening the celluloid with glass paint.

With this installation that accompanies the launch of her book, the artist aims to create a sheltered and soft space to display these delicate images that she has taken of teenagers but also the ones that she took of herself at that age.

The sheets, the refuge par excellence of the adolescent, transport us directly to that universe, to that vital stage, at the same time as it engages us to a more intimate process of viewing the moment that we enter the little space.

In short, this hut, this refuge, as well as being a metaphor for adolescent representation itself due to its fragile structure, aims to protect and give the importance that these portraits, which are normally quickly consumed on social media or in regular photographic displays, deserve.

For the first time we gave both inside (gallery) and outside (shop window) spaces to the same artist, Olivia Albanell, to work on two parallel installations that were constantly evolving during the month long exhibition, that ended up being more of an artist residency than a regular show. Olivia splashed her work around in a free form logic that comes from her own personal instinct, changing it, adding and taking away elements that included everything from drawings and personal notebooks to tiny sculptures, organic pieces like wood and sea shells hanging from strings and found objects that she combines until it all makes sense.

For over a month, which included long visits, private tours and plain hanging around, she invaded parts of our bookshop transforming them into a physical output of her mind, her imagination and her soul.

Dominican artist Mayte Nicole Esteban approached Terranova with the idea of publishing a set of Tarot cards, based on her illustrations of the twenty two main arcana figures from the Marseille tradition. The project soon evolved into an artist edition, consisting of big sized postcards screenprinted on white ink over black cardboard, a fold out poster with poems by Alejandra Smits and Julia Guzman, and a ceramic container made by designer and potter Robbie Whitehead.

The exhibition served as a presentation for the artist edition, with all original artwork on display, the boxed sets piling up against the corner, and a solitary wax candle by Krystel Cárdenas in the opposite wall. A small sized catalogue was published by Terranova with a reproduction of all twenty-two ink illustrations and an interview with Mayte Nicole Esteban by Alba Galocha.

Since the moment he settled in Rotterdam, José Quintanar has been working around the concept of the Dutch landscape, mainly as a pictorial tradition in Art History, one based in the construction (and deconstruction) of the elements of a landscape, but also as an exploration of the idea of colonization of a given space.

For his 13th instalment in this series, Quintanar was invited by Terranova for the inauguration show of their new library and the back-room gallery devoted to installations around the editorial practice. The artist chose to adapt the idea of colonization by stamping a deconstructed drawing of a landscape into the pages of 91 different books bought in the second-hand bookshops found around the docks of Rotterdam.

As it’s common to his practice, he single-handedly did the whole process himself. He drew the landscape, deconstructed its lines, made 16 wooden blocks out of it (13 drawings + 3 title pages), personally selected and bought the books, stamped them with red ink, cut and folded all 91 jackets individually out of Dutch-orange paper, and numbered all books after previsualizing the position of each of them in the gallery space.

All 91 books, along the molds used to stamp them and all twelve previous publications from his Dutch Landscape series, were exhibited and up for sale, marking the first ever publication of an artist book from Terranova. A small catalogue was also published as a friendly companion to the exhibition, containing an in-depth interview with the artist by Terranova founder Luis Cerveró, together with a few samples of stamped pages from different books and a thorough bibliography of José Quintanar’s complete publications to date.
